Virginia A Freedgood

March 29, 1937 — April 2, 2025

Virginia Freedgood of Doylestown, Pennsylvania passed away on Tuesday, April 2. She was 88 years old and was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Freedgood.

Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Cecilia and Peter Fremer. The Fremers liked to take family trips around the Northeast, and a visit to Williamsburg, Virginia sparked her lifelong interest in history.

Virginia received a B.A. from Queens College, and worked throughout her adult life as an appraiser, curator, and antique dealer. She started Virginia Nicholson Antiques in 1969. In 1974, while serving as the curator for the Lexington Historical Society, she secured the purchase at auction of original, historically significant furniture of the Hancock Clark House, including a maple and cherry wood table at which Samuel Adams and John Hancock dined with Reverend Jonas Clarke on April 18, 1775. In 1977, she received a flagpole ball as an award from the Town of Lexington for her work as the curator. She appraised antiques for Skinner Auctions and in 1988, she married Oscar Freedgood, and they ran the antique business for 25 more years before retiring to Buck’s County, Pennsylvania. She later served as curator for the Moland House in Warwick, Pennsylvania, the historic site where George Washington encamped with his troops in the summer of 1777.

In addition to antiques and history, she loved art, music, and travel. She was an accomplished pianist as a young woman and danced and played piano for a Polish dance group when her family lived in London. She engaged in research projects of personal interest of places she loved, including New Mexico, where she and Oscar lived in the 1990s, and Upstate New York, where she spent time with her family as a girl.

Virginia is survived by daughters: Elizabeth Nicholson and Ruth Janjic from her first marriage to Paul Nicholson; grandchildren: Claire Brown, Mark Nicholson, Amy Nicholson, Carrie Hipwell, Chris Janjic, and Nina Janjic, as well as six great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Helen Kester and stepdaughters: Barbara Freedgood, Elaine Freedgood and stepson, Marc Freedgood, as well as four step grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Virginia was preceded in death by her son, Peter Nicholson.
