Ruth Alice Hedrick of Doylestown died at home on Saturday, October 14, 2023, with her family by her side. She was 95 years old.
Born in Doylestown, Ruth was the daughter of the late Matthew and Edith Godshall.
She graduated from Doylestown High School, class of 1946 and Lansdale School of Business, class of 1948.
In 1948, Ruth married Bruce Hedrick of Perkasie. They were married for 58 years until his death in 2007.
Ruth was a member of the Doylestown Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years and was a Sunday School teacher and committee member during many of those years. When she was no longer able to attend church in person, she regularly received in-home communion and visits from Deacon Marie Cooper to keep up with the current church activities and latest news.
Ruth and Bruce were part owners of the former Leatherman and Godshall Food Market in Doylestown where she could be found filling orders and running the cash register. After the sale of the store, she worked as a Minute Clerk for Judge John Rufe at the Bucks County Courthouse until her retirement in 2005. She formed lasting friendships with her colleagues and would share funny stories with her children.
Ruth was a member of the Doylestown High School reunion committee and volunteered as a Girl Scout troop leader and Cookie Chairperson, a Brownie troop leader and a Cub Scout den mother. She also served on the Central Bucks High School prom committee.
She enjoyed knitting, attending book club meetings and entertaining her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ruth is survived by her children: Lynn Foulk Purvis, Bradford (Janet), Douglas (Cecelia), and Susan Zimmerman (Brian), as well as her grandchildren: Georg Purvis (Meredith) and Leah Purvis; Kathryn Bowers (James), Stephanie Kibler (Bradley), and Matthew (Marah); Stephen (Heather) and Christine (Paul); and Kyle Zimmerman; great-grandchildren: Ella, Travis, Shane, and Brynn; Charlotte and Ensley and a nephew and niece.
Ruth’s family thanks the aides, nurses, and team at Abramson Hospice and Bayada Hospice for their compassionate care during their in-home visits. Additionally, her family appreciates the visits and delicious food gifts from Ruth’s friends and neighbors.
Her service will be held graveside at 1 p.m., Thursday, October 26 in Doylestown Cemetery, 235 East Court Street, Doylestown.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Ruth’s name may be made to the Doylestown Presbyterian Church, 127 East Court St, Doylestown, PA 18901 or to the donor’s favorite charitable organization.
