Mary C. Mehling

d. July 22, 2016

Mary Christine Mehling passed from this world Friday, July 22, 2016. She was 95.

Mary was married for 58 years to her husband, Cyril “Cy”, who survives her.

She was born Mary Christine Tomecek to Anna (Fleishman) and John Tomecek in Tiffin, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her older sister, Sister Ann Fidelis (Anna Mary Tomecek) of the Ursuline Sisters in Tiffin, Ohio and older brother Joseph M. Tomecek of Lima, Ohio.

She was a graduate of Tiffin Calvert High School, Mary Manse College, and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce from Tiffin University. She later went on to work at “The National” Machinery Co. of Tiffin, Ohio. She also served in the Gray Lady Service of the American National Red Cross. She met and married Cyril A. Mehling of Fremont, Ohio in 1957.

After a whirlwind romance, Mary took on the most challenging job in her life- becoming the mother in an instant family with husband Cy and three boys. The family moved to Kings Park, N.Y. in 1958. The next year, Mary gave birth to her own son. While Cy flew for American Airlines, Mary kept the home fires burning raising the four boys- Jim, Chris, Mark and Joe. She was very active as a volunteer in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Kings Park.
In 1969, the family moved to Gardenville. In this new chapter of life, she volunteered at Doylestown Hospital, happily serving patients for thousands of hours. She also served at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Doylestown, where she was recognized as the “Woman of the Year” in 1997 by the Ladies of Mt. Carmel.

As a young girl and as a lady in her 80’s, Mary loved activities such as reading, working crossword puzzles, playing tennis, bowling, and meeting and observing people. As the wife of a pilot, she found many opportunities to visit with people from all over the country. Without question, her first love was always Cy. Her unwavering devotion was exemplified when she nursed him back to health during a two-year period when he was bedridden from an aircraft accident, an accident where doctors believed that he might not walk again. Those remaining, Cy, Jim and Andrea, Chris and Janet, Mark and Debby, and Joe and Betty, seven grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, all hope that each of you reading this remember Mary as we do — a woman who did amazing things quietly, living a life of devotion to her husband, family, church, and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to her funeral Mass 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Roman Catholic Church, 5175 Cold Spring Creamery Road, Doylestown, where the public may call after 9:30 a.m., prior to the Mass. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mary’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Delaware Valley Chapter, Suite 102, 399 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
