Lawrence Kenneth Shultes of Doylestown, PA died from pneumonia at the Abington Hospital Jefferson Health, Abington, PA, on September 24, 2024. He was surrounded by his three loving sons – Phil, John and Ken – and their spouses and/or partners.
Born in Albany, New York Larry was 83 years old when he passed away. He and his beloved wife Anne Shultes were married for more than 61 years.
He was a kind, modest, intelligent, creative man who led a full and accomplished life and was a wonderful father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He was loved and admired by his family and friends and will be missed by all who knew him.
Larry grew up in Slingerlands New York with his late parents, Davis and Grace Shultes, and his siblings, Monty and Diane. Larry attended Wesleyan University in Connecticut where he majored in Mathematics, played on the golf team and made many trips to visit Anne, who attended nearby Mount Holyoke College. They were married on July 6, 1963, just a few months after graduating. A few short years later, Larry completed the necessary exams to become a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and he worked as an actuary at Prudential Insurance Company for his entire career.
By the age of 26, Larry was the father to three young boys. Larry and Anne raised their family in Florham Park, New Jersey until 1974, at which time they moved to Doylestown Pa., where they lived for 50 years.
Larry and Anne loved to travel and in addition to annual family trips to Sharbot Lake, Ontario and Clearwater, Florida, where Larry’s parents lived, the family went on camping trips to the Pine Barrens; an adventure-filled three-week cross-country vacation in their station wagon; many fond trips to Glens Falls, New York to visit his late relatives and great friends Pat and Bob Sullivan and their family; and, other places too numerous to mention.
In the earlier years, holidays and birthday celebrations were always joyously shared with Larry’s brother Monty and his family. Later in life, many amazing holidays, Canada trips and everyday happy moments were spent with very special friends Bob and Jen Sidelinker and their family. Larry and Anne continued to travel well into their 70’ — frequently with friends and relatives to include Linda and Ron Thomas, Pat and Bob Sullivan, and their Pinochole Group — with trips to France, England, Ireland, Switzerland, Canada, and more.
Larry was nothing short of a modern-day renaissance man. He was a tremendous golfer, that was well known, but he also excelled at tennis, basketball, and essentially all sports. Larry was a skilled carpenter, building furniture, outhouses and dock sections – just to name a few. He was an artist, with a particular acumen in pastel drawings of pets, birds and Canadian island landscapes. He was a skilled musician, playing guitar, piano and the Cello. He was an Ornithophile, a Dendrophile, a classical music Melophile, and a gamer with proficiency in Scrabble, Bridge, Wizard, and much more. Larry also volunteered his time to coach his sons when they were kids, served as a cub-scout leader, and served as President of the Band Parents for a number of years, as did Anne. Later in life he donated his time to volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the New Jersey State Library Talking Books and Braille Center, to orate books onto audiotape for the blind. Larry shared all of these loves, gifts and commitments with his family and his friends, which is perhaps his greatest legacy.
It is an understatement to say that Larry was a quiet, self-effacing, modest man. He never complained despite many ailments which included blood and prostate cancer, heart issues, strokes, and more. Wherever he is, we hope that he knows how proud we are of him and how grateful we are for him.
Larry is survived by: his wife Anne Shultes; his sons and their wives/partners, Phil Shultes and Lynn Underhill, John and Cynthia Shultes, and Ken Shultes and Serena Kurtz; his grandchildren Alli Shultes, Anna Shultes, Mike Shultes, Connor Shultes, Hayden Shultes, Elizabeth Coughlin, Maddie Shultes, Charlie Shultes and Lydia Shultes.
