John W Hamrick of Flemingtion, New Jersey passed away with his family by his side. John was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Darrel and Sharon Hamrick. His early life in Ohio, and then West Virginia gave him a foundation of love, family, hard work, and perseverance. He graduated from Richwood High School in West Virginia. He gained his work ethic and many skills from his father, although none of it came easy. He gave as well as he got from his two sisters and six cousins, as the family was lovingly and deeply connected.
Known as “Smoke” to those that knew him, he was a talented drummer, union carpenter and fine woodworker. He will be remembered as the backbone of many southern rock bands. Watching him perform, especially on his North Drums, was powerful and he was admired by many of his fellow musicians. Performing in West Virginia, New Jersey and up and down the East Coast was a highlight of his life. He carried this passion throughout his life. Smoke took joy in sharing his love of the craft in his quiet and concise manner, passing on the credence that drums are TMOTA, The Meat of the Act.
John was a NJ union carpenter of Local 254 for many years until his retirement. He was respected by his peers, always paying attention to detail and never sacrificing quality. He was passionate about learning and exploring new methods, mediums, and finding the right tool for the job. Throughout his life, he continued to amaze friends and family with what he created. The more complex the project, the more time he took to study and methodically complete stunning pieces of woodworking artistry. His home shop was a point of pride and a haven for his love of the craft. He was a jack of all trades, working diligently on his home for his family. Each year brought another project, that John planned and finished with determination. If you’d asked John to sit with you for a spell, he’d wonder why…..there was so much to still be done.
John is survived by his wife Maureen, sons John Jr. and Ward, his grandsons Dylan and Jackson, his mother Sharon, his sisters Deborah and Beverly, loving cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Darrel.
He was a talented, special and great man and will be dearly missed.
