Frederick A. Bartunek, husband of the late Patricia Lenahan Bartunek passed away peacefully on Dec. 27, 2016 after a prolonged illness. He was 84 years old.
Born in Queens, New York, he was the son of the late Frank L. and Josephine Meloun Bartunek. His only sibling, Frank, a decorated Korean War veteran, died in 1993.
Fred, who was a second-generation American citizen of Czech descent, was the first in his family to attend College. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University in 1954 and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. After being honorably discharged from the United States Army, he entered into the budding computer field. Starting as a programmer with Remington Rand, he later moved into sales, branch management and marketing. While the corporation’s name changed as the computer industry expanded, he flourished as a businessman within what is now known as the Unisys Corporation for more than thirty-five years.
Frederick was an avid sports enthusiast. As a younger man, he jogged at least two miles on a daily basis. He was a formidable opponent when playing tennis. After retirement, he actively honed his golf game. Although he had no formal training in landscaping or design, with his usual diligent research into any unknown subject matter and natural symmetric eye, he annually created professional grade bed gardens to accentuate the beauty of his home. As an active Catholic and Eucharistic minister for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Doylestown, he shared his gardening skills with the parish community by lovingly maintaining one of the Stations of the Cross in Mt. Carmel’s Prayer Garden for more than ten years.
Fred is survived by his son, Michael Bartunek, his wife, Diane, of Collegeville; his daughter, Mary Holcombe, her husband, Tom, of Doylestown and his daughter, Kathleen Bartunek, of Horsham. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Tina, Michaela, Callan and Molly.
Frederick’s funeral service and interment will be held privately at the discretion of the family.
