Edward J. Coverdale III, M.D., 82, of Buckingham, Pennsylvania passed away on May 13, 2023.
Ed is a Pennsylvanian through and through. He was born to the late Edward James Coverdale Sr. and Ave Marie (Hamilton) Coverdale in Philadelphia. Ed grew up in the city but spent his summers in Danboro, PA. Ed attended West Catholic High School where he met the love of his life, Ann Marie (Durkan) Coverdale. Ann and Ed were married for 55 years and have five children together.
After graduating high school, Ed attended LaSalle College, earning his undergraduate degree in biology and then Jefferson Medical College where he earned his Doctor of Medicine. Following his schooling, Dr. Coverdale started practicing medicine at Misericordia Hospital. Dr. Coverdale then joined the United States Navy where he served as Lieutenant, General Medical Officer at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. After two years of active duty in the United States Navy, Dr. Coverdale returned to Philadelphia where he completed his residency at Misericordia Hospital and was certified in Internal Medicine.
During Dr. Coverdale’s residency, Ed and Ann moved out of the city to Buckingham, Pennsylvania where they raised their family. Dr. Coverdale was one of the first Internal Medicine doctors in the Doylestown area, opening his practice in 1973. At Doylestown Hospital, he served as Director, Department of Medicine and President of the Medical Staff. Dr. Coverdale was also a physician at Neshaminy Manor. Dr. Coverdale practiced medicine for 45 years; he was a beloved physician who took great care of his patients.
Ed was a devoted father and grandfather, attending his kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events and activities throughout the years. He loved watching the Philadelphia Eagles especially with his family. He instilled the value of hard work in his family and was well-loved. He was a compassionate individual who dedicated his life to helping others.
Ed is survived by his five children: Edward (Sharon) Coverdale of Boxborough, MA; Gregory (Dana) Coverdale of Doylestown, PA; Christine (Clifton) Pyne of Hilltown, PA; Marcella (Matthew) Hartman of Gettysburg, PA and Annmarie (Kyle) McCracken of Ardsley, PA, as well as twelve grandchildren and his sister, Ave Marie (Bill) Mulford. Ed is preceded in death by his wife of five decades, Ann Marie Coverdale, who passed away only a week before he did. Ed was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Coverdale.
Relatives and friends are invited to Dr. Coverdale’s funeral Mass at 11 a.m., Friday, May 19 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 5194 Cold Spring Creamery Road, Doylestown where the family will greet guests from 10 a.m., until the time of Mass. Interment will follow in Mass in Doylestown Cemetery.
