Edward “Ted” Atkinson Twining, Jr. died December 12, 2023 at the age of 89.

Ted was son of the late Edward A. Twining and Martha Anders Twining of Doylestown, PA.

He was a graduate of Doylestown High School in 1951. While there, he was a multi sport athlete including being a varsity basketball player. Ted also received the outstanding swimming and diving awards at the Fanny Chapman Pool. Ted attended Lafayette College, where he was a member of the swim team. Ted was also a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon National Fraternity (DKE), Gate and Key Society, and Calumet Society at Lafayette. Ted transferred and graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was the Vice President of DKE and a member of the Interfraternity Council.

While at Maryland, Ted met his wife Cecilia (Cissy). The couple was married for 65 years. They were married one week after graduation at the chapel on the Maryland campus in 1956.

After graduation, Ted became a Navy pilot, flying P2V Neptune Anti-submarine aircraft. His squadron monitored the removal of Russian missiles from Cuba during the Kennedy administration. After his Navy service, Ted worked in private industry, working for several major chemical companies. Ted had a long career with BASF, taking Ted and his family to several different cities around the country.

During his life, Ted was an avid sportsman. He played in several tennis leagues. Notably, Ted was captain of his team, winning the Dallas area club championship at Hackberry Creek Country Club three times. When the family lived in Huntington, New York, Ted took up sailing, and he raced Sunfish and a Greenwich 24 out of Centerport Yacht Club. Ted also enjoyed playing in men’s league softball. Ted and Cissy loved to travel, especially on cruises. Their exploits took them all over the world, including Hong Kong, mainland China, Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, the Caribbean, and Scandinavia. Ted also had a love of old movies and live theater.

Ted is survived by his children, Theresa Twining Cramer married to Peter Cramer (Houston, TX) and Edward A.Twining, III (Ward) married to Janet Ramsey Twining (Wichita Falls, TX). The Cramer grandchildren are James Cramer married to Simca Bouma-Cramer (Falls Church, VA) and Kellen Cramer Mohrmann married to Nicole Mohrmann. The Twining grandchildren are Travis Twining (Wichita Falls, TX) and Tanner Twining married to Colleen Roberts Twining (Lubbock, TX). He has five great-grandchildren, Travis Twining’s sons, Tate, Hudson, and Madden, and Tanner’s son, Jackson and daughter Madison.  Ted is also survived by his brother, John Twining married to Lynn Mudd Twining (Southlake, TX).

Relatives and friends are invited to his graveside service at 1 p.m., Tuesday, December 19 in Doylestown Cemetery, 215 East Court Street, Doylestown.
